To find the best TV for you, it's important to think about what you watch and where you'll be watching it. If you're a movie lover, OLED TVs from brands like Samsung, Sony, and LG give amazing picture quality with deep blacks and rich colours. Gamers will want a 4K Ultra HD TV with high refresh rates and low input lag. For bright rooms, Mini-LED and QLED TVs across brands including Hisense, TCL, and Hubbl are great as their colours stay vibrant even in direct sunlight. Standard LED TVs still give great picture quality at a good price.

A Smart TV is any television that connects to the internet, allowing you to stream popular apps like Netflix, Disney+, Stan, and more - no external devices needed! You can also browse the web, control smart home devices, and even cast videos from your phone or tablet. An Android TV is simply a type of Smart TV, which runs on Google’s Android OS, giving you access to Google Play for a wider range of apps and features like Google Assistant voice control, making it generally considered a more advanced smart TV experience. Put simply, all Android TVs are Smart TVs, but not all Smart TVs are Android.
A regular or standard TV normally wouldn't come with any smart features or internet connectivity out of the box, but can still deliver excellent picture quality. There are ways to make your tv a smart tv, by adding a streaming device like a Chromecast, Fire Stick, or Apple TV to enjoy Smart TV functionality. Be sure to check out our How to make a TV a Smart TV guide if you're thinking about making some smart changes to your current setup, we'll get you there.
A simple way to figure out the best TV size for your room, is to think about how far you'll be sitting from the screen. While there's no one-size-fits-all answer, we have a formula to help calculate the ideal viewing distance. Simply multiply the screen size of the TV by 3 and this what your viewing distance should be (in cm). If you're after a TV for a smaller room or bedroom, then a 40 to 50 inch TV is usually a good fit. For your living room or similar sized space, you might want to look at something between 55 and 65 inches. And if you're going all out with a home theatre or have a large space to fill, then a 75 to 85 inch TV could be the way to go!
These terms all refer to the resolution of a TV screen, which basically means how many tiny dots or pixels make up the picture. More pixels mean a clearer, more detailed image. For a HD TV, these TVs have a resolution of 720 pixels, Full HD TVs have a resolution of 1080p pixels, and UHD or 4k TVs have a resolution over four times that of Full HD TVs. As you can imagine, the result is incredibly sharp and detailed images.
Think of it like this: HD is like looking at a nice picture, Full HD is like looking at a high-quality photo, and Ultra HD is like looking through a window - everything is super clear and lifelike.
Each of these TV types represent different display technologies that they provide. OLED TVs for example provide deeper blacks and really distinct contrast because each pixel lights up (rather than a dark spot being completely pitch black), so they are perfect for darker / dimly lit rooms - think cinema setup. QLED TVs on the other hand boost brightness and colours which allows these TVs to thrive in bright rooms. Mini-LED TVs give a great medium by offering a balance of high brightness and sharp contrast and are the evolution of the now standard LED TVs.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a technology which produces a more natural and realistic picture by showing details in both very bright and very dark scenes. For example, in a dark cave, HDR TVs show the colour and texture of the walls; in a bright scene, individual sunbeams are clearly seen. If your device doesn't support HDR, visit your nearest electronics store to experience it for yourself.
There are a few different types of HDR to choose from. HDR10 is the standard HDR format for most TVs, while Dolby Vision adjusts brightness scene by scene for a cinema-quality experience. Samsung also has its own version of Dolby Vision, called HDR10+, which optimises content for their TVs. If you're looking for the best HDR experience, we recommend going for a QLED or OLED TV with Dolby Vision.
Most modern TVs can be wall-mounted, freeing up space and creating a sleek look. If your plan is to have the TV mounted on the wall, best practice is to check the specs list or the TV suppliers website directly - or you can always just ask us and we'll guide you through which TVs are mountable and what wall mounts will suit! Save yourself the headache now, so you don't make any costly mistakes during your TV buying journey!
Free-to-air TV is readily available wherever you are in the country, offering the main 3 networks Se7en, Nine and Ten - along with the national networks ABC & SBS, and there are a few nifty ways you can get it on your television. The first is the old classic antenna / satellite approach - plug one in, tune the TV and enjoy your free tv channels.
If you have a smart TV that is connected to the internet, you have many more free TV options to choose from thanks to expanded digital TV apps from these networks. Simply decide which network you want to watch, find and download their app on your Smart TV's app store, install it, and follow the instructions to create an account. You’ll then be able to access not only live free-to-air TV but also video on demand (VOD) from a larger selection of channels than just the classic 5 network channel options. This means you can catch up on any shows you missed during the week, making this the best option for free TV in Australia.
