Greatness often begins with a single idea and for Tefal, the journey to where they are today began in 1954. French engineer, Marc Gregoire invented a process for bonding PTFE (PolyTetraFluroEthylene) to aluminium, for the purpose of making his fishing rod reel in more smoothly. Marc’s wife, Colette Gregoire, came up with the idea to apply the coating to cookware to make them easier to clean and cook with, “If your PTFE is as wonderful as you say, use it for something useful. Make me a pan the milk won’t stick to.”
This led to the creation of Tefal in 1956, named by hybridising Teflon and Aluminium; by the end of that same year Tefal was making one hundred non-stick pans per day. While Tefal was already well-known locally, their popularity bloomed in 1961 when an American magazine published a picture of fashion icon, Jackie Kennedy, leaving a New York store with a Tefal pan in hand. That photo received worldwide coverage and put Tefal on the global map.
Since then, Tefal have developed innovations in cookware that have earned them their place as a leader in small appliances and the number one name in non-stick cookware. These include the distinctive Thermo-Spot, released in 2000, which changes colour depending on pan temperature.
Today, more than 50 million cookware products are manufactured each year in Rumilly and Tournus, France, operating in over 120 countries all around the world. With their constant desire for innovation, their commitment to the health of the planet, and support of UNICEF nutritional programs, Tefal live up to their motto of making the everyday easier.
