About Karcher
Founded in 1935, the iconic German company known as Karcher began with young engineer and inventor Alfred Karcher, who had previously been developing and marketing his product ideas in the field of heating technology.
Setting the foundation for the future of the company in 1950, Karcher developed the DS 350 Steam Jet, Europe’s first hot water pressure washer. The water heater within this model was so unique, it would go on to become the benchmark for all burners today. With Alfred’s passing in 1959, his wife Irene assumed the mantle and oriented the company toward cleaning as a basic need. While Alfred was the innovative inventor, Irene was the energetic businesswoman and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for her business management.
In 1974, Karcher took a step into the unknown and began their focus on pressure washer technology for professionals. This was accompanied by a colour change from hammer-finished blue to the iconic Karcher yellow. Karcher became so globally prominent in the industry of high-pressure cleaning that the word ‘Karcher’ is used as a noun for any cleaning system relying on high-pressure water.
A major milestone came in 1984 with the introduction of the HD 555; the first portable high-pressure cleaner. This would signal Karcher’s move into the consumer market, with the company rolling out steam cleaners and vacuum cleaners for private households. This was followed, almost a decade-and-a-half later by the release of the first window vac, the WV 50, in 2008.
Helping to overcome challenges and support the plans of their customers is in the yellow-coloured DNA of Karcher, whether it’s in a personal or professional setting. Not only striving to lessen their environmental impact, Karcher undertakes their own Cultural Sponsorship program, helping to clean and maintain cultural landmarks. Beginning in 1980 with the ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue in Rio de Janeiro, to date Karcher have cleaned more than 140 cultural monuments, including Mount Rushmore and St Peter’s Square.
