Design

Early in the history of B&O, the company began to create products with a focus on design as well as technology. This experimentation with the conceptual was influenced by architect and designer Ib Fabiansen, beginning to work for the company in 1957.

Visually, B&O products are unique, with each designer bringing their particular flair and style to the table. This particular approach to product creation led to a 1978 exhibition in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, dedicated solely to B&O designs.

Today, B&O forgoes a traditional design team, hiring external creatives for each project to continually operate at the forefront of design. This desire for the conceptual has led to a culture of thinking in terms of experiences. While the approach of each designer might be idiosyncratic, the dedication to the use of high-quality materials is a core pillar of B&O.

All the aluminium for B&O products are created in-house, ensuring the highest-quality design. Prized for its rigidity and portability, the unique anodisation process brings out captivating depths from within the metal. With leather straps and headbands, along with ear cups made of lambskin, B&O products feel soft against the skin, looking more beautiful as they age.

Working closely with iconic textile designer Kvadrat, B&O uses the warmth and complexity of wool with their products, closely matching the fabric textures with the interior design palette. Reflecting the Scandinavian heritage of bringing wood into home, B&O incorporates high-quality timber such as walnut and maple into the structural elements of their products.

About B&O

Before becoming the high-end luxury electronics company they are today, Danish company Bang & Olufsen began by developing radio equipment. In fact, B&O designed a radio to work with alternating current, at a time when most radios were still running on batteries.

Bang & Olufsen began in 1925, founded by the heroes of this story, Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen. Graduating as an engineer in 1924, Peter spent six months working in a U.S radio factory, teaming up with Svend upon his return to Denmark. Throughout the 1930s and 40s, B&O achieved a number of successful developments, including the iconic Beolit 39 radio.

B&O would face some hardship towards the end of WWII, with its factory at Gimsing in Struer in Northern Jutland being burnt down by pro-Nazi sabateurs. Refusing to be bowed by this complication, Bang & Olufsen rebuilt the factory, later going on to develop a range of radio, radiogram, and television sets.

Adapting during the 2008 economic crisis, Bang & Olufsen began to focus on its traditional strengths: high-quality audio and video products, along with automotive sound systems, which allowed the company to truly put their heart, soul, and passion into their niche products.

In March 2015, HP with partnered with B&O to become their premium audio partner for their computers and other devices, replacing a former partnership with Beats Electronics. Today, B&O are renowned for the premium quality of their audio products both in design and sound quality. Working with radios and loudspeakers led them to truly value and seek out high-fidelity musical reproduction, uninfluenced by technological limitations.
