Are smart washing machines worth it?

Clever convenience or cost savings?

Smart washing machines are no longer a niche product exclusively for tech-savvy early adopters, with many major brands now incorporating smart features into mid-range as well as premium models. But do these connected appliances justify their price tag? The answer depends on the type and level of smart technology included, as well as how much you’ll actually use it.

Firstly, what makes a washer smart?

If a washing machine can connect to your home Wi-Fi network and be controlled via an app on your phone or smart device, it's ‘smart’. While some smart washers have only entry-level smart credentials, others include premium smart features.

Additionally, washers with smart functionality tend to have other advanced features that, although not ‘smart’ in the Wi-Fi sense of the definition, are sometimes referred to as such.

If a washing machine can connect to your home Wi-Fi and be controlled via an app, it's smart.

Load sensing, auto-dosing and drum motion control, for example, don't require WiFi connectivity to function, but because they're typically found in machines with smart features, it can be useful to categorise them alongside each other.

Entry-level smart washer features

These are the standard smart features often found in lower priced smart washing machines (typically RRP $800-1,000):

  • WiFi connectivity - Connects to a smartphone app for basic remote control and monitoring of your wash

  • Push notifications - Sends alerts when a wash cycle is finished, which prevents clothes sitting damp for too long

These simple smarts are often accompanied by these other advanced - but non-smart - features:

  • Basic load sensing - Automatically adjusts water levels based on load size

  • Simple cycle customisation - Save and recall preferred settings via the control panel

  • Basic error codes and diagnostics - Helps identify common issues before the need to call for repairs.

Premium smart washer features

In addition to the entry-level features listed above, some higher-end washing machines (typically RRP $1,000+) have these smart features:

  • Voice assistant compatibility - Control your washer with voice commands via Google Assistant, Alexa, or Apple HomeKit

  • Remote diagnostics - Advanced troubleshooting can often resolve issues without requiring service visits

  • Energy monitoring - Helps you manage utility bills by tracking usage and efficiency via your smartphone app

  • Smart home integration - Communicates with other smart appliances like dryers and thermostats to optimise energy use

  • Usage statistics - Track your washing patterns and get personalised recommendations

  • Advanced cycle programming - Create and save detailed custom cycles via app

These advanced features often accompany premium smart features:

  • Multiple drum patterns - Adjusts washing action to suit different fabric types

  • Advanced auto-dosing - Automatically dispenses the right amount of detergent and softener based on load size and fabric type, saving detergent, time and mess

  • AI-driven wash programs - Automatically adjusts water levels, cycle duration, and energy usage based on weight and soil level.

The cost of smart features

Because they usually come as part of a model's overall package rather than as a standalone upgrade option, it’s difficult to put an exact price on smart features.

However, if you were to compare similar capacity models within the same brand's range, you would probably see a price difference of an extra $200-300 or more for washing machines with smart and other advanced features. For example, a smart 8kg front load washer might cost around $900, while a same-sized basic model from the same brand could be priced at $900.

As smart technology becomes more common, the price gap between smart and non-smart models is gradually decreasing, particularly in mid-range machines.

Which brands make smart washing machines?

Smart technology may be getting more common in washing machines, but it hasn't been embraced equally by all brands.

Many leading appliance manufacturers, such as Samsung, LG, Fisher & Paykel, Haier, Electrolux, V-ZUG, Hisense and Beko, incorporate Wi-Fi connectivity and smart features into several models, including some top loaders.

Others, like Bosch, tend to include smart functionality only in their higher-end products. Rather than an unwillingness to adopt technology, this is often a strategic decision to allocate manufacturing costs to features they believe their customers will use and value more than smart connectivity.

Potential drawbacks of getting smarter

While smart washing machines can make every load of laundry feel a little lighter, there are some factors to weigh up:

  • Higher upfront cost – If you want the benefits of a smart washer, you’ll pay more for it than you would for the most basic washer of the same capacity.

  • Reliance on Wi-Fi – If your home Wi-Fi network is unstable, remote control and notifications may not work reliably.

  • Complexity – Some people prefer a simple control panel rather than navigating a smartphone app. If you don’t live a busy life where you’re always on the go, you may have no need or desire to monitor your washing remotely.

  • Longevity concerns – More technology means more potential points of failure and costly repairs. Most of the time, everything will be fine, but you might want to look out for machines with longer or extended warranties. Most smart washers come with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty, but Beko offers an additional three years’ cover upon registration.

Can smart washing machines save you money?

Yes and no. The smart features themselves have minimal impact on water and energy efficiency and the associated running costs. The other advanced features often found in smart washers, such as load sensing, AI-driven programs and auto-dosing, can make a difference though.

If reducing your running costs and carbon footprint are priorities, look for washing machines with higher water and energy star ratings. Fortunately, these more efficient models tend to have smart functionality as well.

So while smart washers can save money on energy bills, it's not really due to their smart features so much as their other clever technology.

Are smart washers worth it?

If you value the convenience of remote control, diagnostics and notifications, investing in a smart washer is worth it.

Like any appliance with added bells and whistles, the extra cost of smart features is worth it only if you use them.

If you have no need for a high-tech laundry day, though, you can save yourself some expense by choosing a basic washer. With smart features becoming standard in more mid-range and premium machines, however, you may find yourself restricted to lower-end models from a limited number of brands.
