The genius element behind the beautiful smokey flavoured results of a Traeger grill is the use of their pellets. Unlike a stick burner BBQ that uses lumps of hardwood or a gas smoker that uses soaked wood chips, Traeger's use 100% premium hardwood pellets.
The pellets are made in Traeger mills in the USA from 100% real hardwood that does not have any artificial binders. The wood pellets are compressed with 10,000 pounds of pressure which forces the moisture from the wood to hold them together. And once the pellets are formed and have cooled, they are bagged and shipped from their mill to homes across the globe.
By using no artificial binders and no synthetic fluids, the pellets are environmentally friendly and will not impart any unnatural flavours onto your food.
There are many flavours to choose from, so you'll be sure your meals are produced with maximum BBQ flavour no matter what dish you're preparing.
From cast iron skillets, to genuine Traeger peach paper, the entire Traeger accessory range will have you smoking like a pro and grilling like a king in no time.
Traeger grills use 100% natural hardwood pellets for flavour as well as the heat source. This style of cooking is as true to the traditional style of over wood cooking as you could come with a modern appliance.
With the turn of the dial you can set the desired cooking temperature and this information will feed into the internal computer and will feed the ignition point with the required amount of pellets to run consistently and efficiently. With this automated system, you fire and temperature range will be consistent, meaning a more even cook while minimizing fuel waste and saving you money.
With the Traeger using pellets and a different style of cooking to your gas BBQ, it's easy to get confused and unsure of how your grill works. Here are some common Traeger words, terms and parts that help impart that wonderful wood flavour into your food.
When you take home your new Traeger, it is important to season the grill. When the manufacturer prepares the grills for sale and distribution, they spray the surface and inside to prevent rust, so by seasoning your grill, this will burn off any leftover residue from the manufacturing process.
Watch the how-to video below for a more in-depth explanation of how to season the grill.
Much like any appliance, your Traeger grill will need regular cleaning and maintenance to ensure you enjoy delicious smokey results safely and efficiently for years to come.
Regular cleaning
As Traeger grills use real hardwood pellets as a fuel and flavour source, residual ash will be left over, so it’s important to be aware of this and clean out the ash bucket after every 3 - 5 cooks.
Invest in a Traeger cover
Nothing will protect your grill as well as a genuine Traeger grill cover. Not only will it protect the barrel, firebox, and chimney from discolouration and animals but it will also prevent water from getting into the hopper. The Traeger uses real hardwood pellets, and much like other woods, not all pellets will burn thoroughly. The leftover Traeger pellets will absorb any water that gets in and expands, clogging the auger. So having a cover will protect your grill.
Clean your grease pan
The best thing for maintenance and cleaning is to line the grease pan with aluminium foil. Make sure to remove the foil and clean the extra grease and debris from the grease pan and the grease drain tube regularly. Remember, it’s always easier to clean grease, fats, and oils when warm.
Empty the grease bucket
Your Traeger grill comes with a small bucket which is used to collect oil and grease while you're cooking. Empty the bucket regularly by pouring it into a sealable container you can dispose of responsibly. Lining the bucket with foil will help make cleaning up a little less messy next time. Remember, make sure to never pour oil or grease down the sink as it will harden and clog your pipes, it's also bad for the environment.
Wipe down your grill exterior
Much like the other parts of your grill, the surface requires cleaning and maintenance. Simply clean the grill with warm soapy water - this will cut through the grease and not damage the coating. Do not use oven cleaners, abrasive cleaners or scouring pads as this will damage the outside of your grill. All you need is warm soapy water and a sponge.
Remove the ash from the firepot
Remove the porcelain grill grate, the grease drain pan, and the heat baffle so you can access the grills firepot. Using a standard household vacuum cleaner, clean around the firepot and vacuum up all the excess ash. Remember to do this once the grill has completely cooled down.
