How to find a Boxing Day bargain without getting up early

The celebration of Boxing Day has been observed in many different ways over the years.  It is believed that the name “Boxing Day” comes from the tradition of masters giving their servants a box full of presents to take home to their families as a reward for their service on Christmas Day – a kind of old-fashioned Christmas Bonus scheme.

It is also a traditional day for distributing the contents of church and charity donation boxes to the poor, as well as the date of the Feast of St Stephen, immortalised by the Christmas carol, Good King Wenceslas.

Sing along if you know the words!

In modern Australia, a few more traditions are commonly observed on this special day:

Relaxing…

One is to wake up slowly but surely, leaving plenty of time to recover from your overindulgence at Christmas dinner the previous night, and settle back with some leftovers and a cold one to watch the Boxing Day Test or the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

Must… grab… first… bargain!

Another is to drag yourself from bed in the pre-dawn light and make a beeline for the nearest shopping centre, joining the jostling crowd around the doors at opening time hoping to be the first to snap up a bargain at the Boxing Day sales.

Sometimes it’s hard to choose between these two extremes.  You find yourself faced with the question of what do you value more – being relaxed, or getting a great deal?

As the little girl in the taco ad said…

The greatest philosopher of our generation.

With Appliances Online at your side, you CAN have both!

He enjoys looking for new and unusual ways for to solve everyday problems using typical household appliances. When he’s not toiling at the desks of Appliances Online and Big Brown Box, he tries to find time to write the next big bestseller and draw satirical cartoons, but is too easily distracted by TV, music and video games. Mark’s favourite appliance is the Dyson Groom Tool, as he loves the concept of vacuuming your dog. Google+
